They can seem opposites, loudness and subtlety. Yet crafting a juicy fortissimo calls on every element of a composer’s craft. In this hourlong class, we will explore the dynamic peaks of classical music, probing the relationship bretween instrumental color and decibel burn and measure the expressive gradients of different crescendos. At the end of the class, you’ll have a new understanding of what makes something loud and why it matters. And, if I can help it, you’ll never misuse the word “crescendo” again.
